Programs

Our core program consists of 6 tiered orchestras.

  • Principal Orchestra is a full orchestra performing advanced repertoire.
  • Concert Orchestra is a full orchestra performing at an intermediate level.
  • Philharmonia String Orchestra is a mid-level string orchestra providing a transition to Concert Orchestra.
  • Philharmonia Orchestral Winds is a wind ensemble providing specific training to wind and brass players.

  • Jr. Strings provides an introduction to ensemble play.

NYS members can also participate in enrichment programs to enhance their training and provide additional performance opportunities.

  • The Chamber Orchestra is open to members of Principal Orchestra who are interested in performing works written specifically for a smaller ensemble.
  • The Chamber Music program provides string and wind players of all levels an opportunity to perform in small ensembles.
  • The Percussion Ensemble provides coaching and performance opportunities for percussionists at all levels.

Membership and placement in Principal, Concert, Philharmonia Strings and Winds, and Prelude is by audition only.

Each player, including a returning musician from the previous year, is auditioned every year by the conductors in late August and the beginning of September to ensure correct placement according to individual ability.
