2016 Concerto Competition Winner: Wujin Kim

Updated: Jan 19, 2018

This season's Winter Concert will feature Wujin Kim, cello, in a performance of the third movement of the Lalo cello concerto.

Wujin Kim, 15, currently assistant principal cellist of the Principal Orchestra, has been a member of the Norwalk Youth Symphony for six years. A freshman at Ridgefield High School, he is a member of Ridgefield High School Symphonic and Chamber Orchestras. He is the son of Jeonglim Han and Jeong-Han Kim. Wujin studies cello under Lois Errante and is coached in chamber music by Asya Meshberg. Among his many honors as a cello musician, Kim was recently named the assistant principal cellist of the Symphony Orchestra at the Connecticut Music Educators Association's Western Regional Music Festival.

Previously, in 2014 and in 2015, he was the principal cellist of the 8th-9th grade Honors orchestras of the Fairfield County String Festival sponsored by the Fairfield County String Teachers. He twice received honorable mention from the New York Music Competition and he was the winner of the 2015 Young Artist Festival, Senior Competition, and 2014 Junior Competition levels, both sponsored by the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra.

Kim, who particularly enjoys playing chamber music, was selected last year as a winner of the American Chamber Orchestra's Concerto Competition and performed with the orchestra. As a chamber musician, he says one of his most rewarding experiences has been meeting new friends and mentors at chamber music camps. He has attended the Chamber Music Institute for Young Musicians for six years and was the winner of the Cello Scholarship for the 2016 Elm City ChamberFest.

When not playing the cello, he enjoys supporting community events with his friends on behalf of organizations such as the American Cancer Society, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Grace Farm’s Community Dinner, and the YMCA of Greenwich.

The Norwalk Youth Symphony Winter Concert will take place on Sunday February 28, 2016 at 3PM at the Norwalk Concert Hall at City Hall, 125 East Avenue, Norwalk CT.
